Gregory Kossinets

I am a researcher on the Google Mobility team in San Francisco, where we produce anonymized traffic data to help cities and urban planners make better decisions based on experiments and innovative research. I work on various aspects of privacy and data quality. Prior to that, I spent several years as a quantitative user experience researcher on Google Maps. Before I went to the industry, I received a PhD in Sociology from Columbia University and worked as a postdoc at Cornell, doing research on online social networks and contributor behavior (yes, I was a data scientist before it was cool). And before graduate school, I majored in physics and worked in IT in Russia, and also studied sociology in Warsaw, Poland. As an applied researcher, I value my academic connections and actively participate in the university relations efforts at Google. In addition to our outreach and research awards programs, I have served on program committees of a number of conferences and workshops, such as WWW, ICWSM, KDD, and as a reviewer and panelist for the National Science Foundation, American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Management Science, Physical Review E, Science, Social Networks, and others.
